i am not trying to be a jackass, but most things are better modded if done properly. if he has no idea what he wants, i doubt that he is going to be mod it. IMO. i don't find them impressive as well.

i would recommend a luthier. i trust them over a tech. either way ask to watch and explain. some times $20-$30 is worth it. especially if you are new to setting up guitars.
