i'd also like to say I found good success with simply changing from minor pentatonic to major, usually adding a few major notes to the minor ones every now and then, good dynamic.

I think it's a mixed of proper and creative music...

I think it's a mixed of proper and creative music theory, rhythm, instrumental sound, and the meaning of the song that defines all those parts. Lacking any one can make a song feel empty.
