Don't be too worried about screwing anything up. You aren't going to take off too much wood with anything above 800 grit paper. You shouldn't even get all the way through the gloss coat on the neck....

Mahogany seems to be a more popular choice for metal guitars, in my experience. That doesn't mean they have to be mahogany, though.

I agree with darrenram1. Keep it and use it to experiment with and learn more about your hobby. Practice setups and fret cleanup. Try different wiring options, learn to coil tap or split a humbucker....

If you're playing through a 15 watt spider, the POD won't do much for you. A new guitar probably won't sound any different either. Find a nicer amp. You shouldn't have much trouble for 200 pounds....

Turn the metronome off. I've been playing 20 years and I've never used one. Pushing yourself like that and trying to use the metronome for a measure of how you are doing is a bad idea in my opinion....

I have Hercules and Fretrests. The Hercules are nice because they "grab" the guitar, but the fretrest is ok, too. Make sure you find studs in the wall if you can (obviously).
