I assume you mean the nouvelle chicane? It allows to be closer to the car in front. At least I think that's the idea. I'd need to watch some on boards to really judge if it was working.

I noticed them doing it. I imagine taking a less optimum line there allows better exit of the next corner for acceleration down the tunnel which is the only real overtaking opportunity at Monaco.
