Squier Telecaster Mod (Pic Heavy)
I have a Squier Affinity Telecaster that I've decided to mod. It was metallic blue before I stripped the paint. Here's the plan:
![]()
The guitar's routed for HS so I'll just have to switch the bridge and install the ferrules. So now for pics! I opted for chemical stripping, but I didn't get a good one so it took forever to strip... This was after it had sat overnight and I'd scrubbed it with a 3M thing. ![]() ![]() Here's the front stripped ![]() And the back ![]() And here's the front sanded to P320 with the neck bolted on just for fun. ![]() Originally, my plan was to stain it with Danish Oil which is why it's stripped down to wood. After stripping though, I counted seven pieces in the body and the scrubber thing had stained some of the wood blue so I just decided to paint it white. Sanding did get a lot of the stains out though. Today I'm sanding the edges so that they're round again and then I'm going to check the whole thing over to make sure I didn't miss anything sanding. very cool looking project! I always wondered what a Tele with a hum in the bridge would sound like. Good luck man and it looks like you got off to a great start.

Haha, thanks! I'm planning on doing a matching P-bass eventually, but I have to start saving for university and get a job first! Maybe Christmas will be nice to me...

I want to see this Tele
![]() Small update: I've finished rounding the edges and checking it over. I've gotten out most of the cross-grain sanding from rounding the edges, but there were a couple of stubborn places where it wouldn't quite get out. The few places where that happened though it's really hard to tell. Anyways, here are some pics: The back, sanded to P320 with my toes in there too ![]() A rounded edge! ![]() I'll get to Home Depot soon and pickup grain filler, sanding sealer, brushes, wire, primer, paint and clear coat. Once my money's done transferring from the bank to my PayPal account I'll order my pickups/hardware too. Hopefully it'll be painted and dry enough to put together by the time my order gets in ![]() Last edited by Locked_Deadbolt : 10-27-2009 at 06:11 PM. |

Get some fake nails that look like tortoise shell and paint your actual toes white.

That's gonna be awesome. If you have a video camera you should make a video of playing it after it's done.

All I'm going to do is get the sting-through bridge, use it to mark where the holes need to be and use a small bit to drill through the top. Then on the other side I'm going to take a bit the same size as the ferrule and drill a hole as long as the ferrule. The last thing will be drilling with a slightly larger bit just a little so that the lip on the ferrule will fit. Then it'll just be a matter of popping in the ferrule and stringing it up. I'm also LIGHTLY putting scotch tape over where I'm going to be drilling to reduce chipping the finish. |

yours was routed for a humbucker?
Mine wasn't... ![]() But i rectified the situation by getting a GFS rail HB. Also, i don't suppose you have a spare strat copy lying around, coz when i did mt tele, i threw in the middle pickup on my Johnson strat, which gave it a really rich full, and heavy sound. but that was coz the original neck pickup broke. |

I'd originally planned on getting a rail humbucker because I didn't want to bother getting a new bridge, but I don't like restringing with the top loader so I'm getting the new bridge. Then i figured I might as well get a full humbucker
![]() To answer your question about the Strat copy, no I don't have one. Unless I absolutely fall in love with Strats sometime soon, I probably won't be getting one of any sort. They're not my favourite. |

I have a quick question regarding finishing. Does alder need a grain filler? ReRanch says it does, but StewMac says it doesn't.
