Decent Cheap Recording Gear.
What would be some decent gear to record with?
I'm not in a band and I don't write a lot of music but sometime I wish I could record some of the riffs so I can use them later on. I know almost nothing about recording and recording equipment. A friend of mine has an H2 Zoom handheld recorder that sounds pretty decent. I think something cheaper than that would eb ideal as long as the drop in quality isn't too severe. |

If you just want to store clips of you playing to refer back to them, pretty much any smartphone could do it for you.

Blue Snowflake or Snowball. Might not be specifically targeted at music recording, but it works very good nonetheless.

probably a hand held recorder with the quality of a computer with a mic and interface. But I'm on a budget. |

Oh how I miss my snowball! I got one and it worked incredibly well for guitar and vocals, then my computer burned up, had to get a new one with vista, and it wasn't supported. I downloaded a firmware update but it still didn't work, and has not worked with windows 7 either. I was sad, but bought an audio-technica usb mic that worked better, and now I've got a full live recording set-up thanks to my tax returns. But oh, how I miss that snowball. You never forget your first! ; ) |

Doesn't have to be portable. It probably wont leave my room. and I'm not asking for the best of the best. Just decent quality. |

there are many questions to be answered when selecting recording gear. how many people do you want to record? what quality do you desire? how poratable does it need to be? how much money you want to spend? sounds like you just want a little 'notepad', to record ideas to incorporate into songs (so portability would be desirable). sounds like quality is not overly necessary as long you can hear what you play. the zoom h1 that i got was 100 bucks. you may find some cheaper, like 40 or 60 bucks, but they may not have stereo condenser mics on them and may not be in stereo. i bought the accessory bag with the h1 and it is useful (but not necessary). http://www.musiciansfriend.com/sear...uestion=zoom+h1 if you want to do some actual track recording, and you already have a computer, you may wanna look into a usb or firewire recording interface. this way you'd be able to use DAW software and actually track record your songs and layer tracks and add plug-in effects. you can get a pretty good 2 channel usb interface for like 150 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-...ecording-system

What about Amplitude or some other iPod touch or smartphone app? I thought bout buying the iRig gadget, has anyone used it? I'm sure the sound quality isn't all that great but it seems like it'd be fun to screw around with

most of those are just going to be line in, with very limited recording functionality. there is no chance of recording vocals or acoustic guitars or just humming a melody line into irig. you could use a phone app or one of those digital voice recorders from radio shack, but they use bad mics, that are omnidirectional and have really crappy preamps. he asked for something at roughly the quality of the H2, and those devices won't really compete as much. they are cheaper though

Somthing like a notepad would be ideal for saving riffs and keeping riff ideas. I may eventually want to start recording full fledged songs with muliple tracks. I have no idea what a "stereo condenser mic" is. I'm off too look up some of these terms to better adress your post. Thank you. Edit: I don't mind investing in decent mics and stuff, I just don't want to spend an arm and a leg. |
