Ngd!

A package arrived recently. Took a while from the initial order...

bit of a stripteaser......

A Dan-Electro JP 59M Black double cutaway

Features:
6 string, double cut away body
21 fret, rosewood board
Single coil lipstick pickups, bridge and neck
Classic open pinion tuners
Recessed bridge, fixed
Three position switch. Bridge, Neck and Combo
Concentric vol/tone controls
Brass nut
Black Gloss base colour, white pickup guard, cream binding

Birthdate:
The guitar was manufactured in Korea 8th Aug 2012. I ordered it 6 weeks prior. I always wanted one of these, made famous by Mr James Page and nowdays manufactured in limited numbers, but not considered rare by any means.

Price and Condition
Despite that, it wasn't that expensive at around $350 AUD plus shipping. Took two weeks to arrive once shipped. Arrived in perfect condition. Not a single blemish. The finish looks sexy, accentuated by the all white pickguard, cream binding and matching controls. The mechanics needed a minor setup, not unusual after being hauled halfway across the world.

Sound
This guitar has serious twang. Smoothe, bright twang!! The brass nut helps it have that 'steely' sound and the sustain is long and strong, really helped along by the lipstick pickups. The sound has a defined cream in its tone. It's gorgeous.

Action
It plays well. Very well. No fret buzz and I left the action to the factory recommended spec. Bends are effortless on 10's gauge. This isn't a shredder, or a metal machine, which again is exactly what I wanted. I have lots of other guitars for that. I can imagine playing this in a hamock, a cold beer on the table next to me, with a small amp sitting on the ground, just lazing out some slow bypass blues and slide and loving every minute of it on a lazy Sunday.

Preferred Genre
This guitar is perfect for blues and sounds dreamy with a slide. I'd say this guitar is optimised to be played with slide as it really stands out. Overall it has a completely different sound and feel from all my other guitars which have strengths in metal and rock. This is exactly what I wanted. I didn't want another guitar which replicated sounds that I already had. The DanElectro hit the mark in this regard

The annoying parts.
No guitar is ever perfect, so here are some things I found with it.

1. Setting up intonation is a bit of a hassle due to the recessed bridge. There was a lot of back and forth having to lift the bridge to get to the adjusts, do the adjust, lower the bridge, rinse and repeat until its done. Not very user friendly by any means.

2. I've never had a guitar that has concentric vol/tone controls so that's taken some getting used to. It's not a flaw with the guitar itself as the controls work flawlessly, and glide on rotation and both the vol and tone cut have a good response over the pot ranges, it's just taking some getting used to.

3. It's light. Very light. This again isn't a flaw with the guitar itself. It's lightness contributes to its bright steely sound, which I regard as would be intentional part of the wood selection and construction. Just all my other guitars (in general) have a good solid heft to them, so when I first picked this up, it was unnervingly effortless.

Overall, for me its a good guitar. Its not the highest quality, but was cheap, looks sexy and sounds creamy. The lipsticks certainly have a unique sound. It's a complimentary addition to the family.
