There are some chords I just can't play. I forget which, but they are some of the bizarre barre chords for Jazz. If I even attempt them I get a burning sensation in my hand. My teacher taught me to just play the part of the chord that he bass does not. It works pretty well. I've also found that I work better with a wider neck, the increased string spacing makes things generally easier on me. Now, while I don't necessarily agree with the tuning, the concept sounds excellent. The guitar spacing could be tailored to the individual, and when playing with a band, the lack of the two strings would not be missed. Let's face it, many solos and lead riffs only use two or three strings anyway, so the lack of the others would not be lamented either. |

It seems that it would save a lot more hassle if you went with an extened scale bass. It's basically what you'd be building.

^ This. A 4 string bass with picolo strings is essentially what you are taking about here. Nothing innovative im afraid.

I really hate to be that guy, but you seriously need to work on your technique if that's the case. It could be factors, such as posture, that are preventing you from progressing as a guitarist. I recommend that you make a thread in the technique forum and see what those guys recommend before deciding that you'll never be able to do certain things. Usually, it just depends on how badly you want to learn something. Also, I personally think a 4 string guitar is a waste(and that Wes Borland really sucks and shouldn't be emulated lol), but the TS should do what makes him happy. Just keep in mind that there are good and bad ideas. ExplorerBuilder was right in that not every idea is "innovative" or even worth attempting. And sometimes a guitar's range can directly affect the growth of a musician, so in reducing the range, you may be deliberately handicapping yourself. It just depends on how good you currently are, and how good you aspire to be. |

Off topic: What exactly makes you think that Wes does suck? On topic: If the guitar had a semi-hollow body, how would it affect the sound?

The dudes in Limp are pretty talented except Durst`s songwriting skills. Please don`t tell me that you think he sucks ONLY because he is in Limp Bizkit?

It's more about four decades of damage to my hands. I've gained a lot of flexibility over the last year, but there are going to be limits. BTW : Today marks one year of playing the guitar. |

Ok, "sucks" was an exaggeration. "Mediocre" would have been a better word to use. Quote:
Oh, sorry to hear that. If you haven't already tried this, there are some great stretches you can do to help loosen up your hands. Here's a video of the stretches I do: show

Okay, if my pinkies pop like **** after reaching a certain angle, what should I do?
Sometimes I have issues with tapping while using my pinkie and they start to hurt after a while. After they pop while reaching that certain angle of bending I lose strength. The doctors I have visited say that they can`t do anything really.
