Effects for Ethereal Sound?
Looking for any tips on how to produce a very haunting, ghostly guitar tone, something similar to old Lycia.
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_nuYVu5Lts) I just picked up a Digitech RP155 and I've produced some mediocre results by cranking the reverb, but beyond that I'm not sure what other effects I should be messing around with? I keep ending up with something that is too droney and lacking in tone. |

Delay and reverb
Set the delay with a good bit of repeats and set the time sorta long. Set mix to taste. For the reverb, you want to have a lot, but not so much it takes over the tone. I usually set the mix around 6 and the decay about 5 or 7. Basically just turn on a delay and reverb and mess with it until you like it. It's really that simple. Once you get the hang of it you'll be fine.

Chorus, Flanger, Octaver, Whammy, Phaser, Delay and Ring Modulators can make some cool scary tones.

Reverb as delay are the main two but o make interesting ethereal sounds, I recommend looking at using a tremolo or an octave pedal over the top.
I like to use my reverb and delay mixed with my Whammy on the setting where it adds an octave to your parts. I like to use the whammy because the tracking glitches when playing chords and it sounds really different. When playing ethereal music, I think chords with open strings in them and sevenths work really well. If your guitar has a tremolo bridge, use that; it sounds great

A healthy amount of reverb and delay with subtle modulation (chorus, flanger, phaser, or tremelo) over the top) has always gotten me that ambient, spacy sound. That, and a strong skill in the volume swell technique.
I can make my guitar sound like ghosts having a conversation with each other using nothing more than the aforementioned effects, my volume knobs, and my neck pickup.
