I think they can only redeem themselves by either making an album witg really experimental parts or by making a concept album.

I don't think they're in need of redemption, their last few albums haven't been the strongest, but they're not bad at all imo. I would love to see them make another really progressive concept album, but given the masterpiece Scenes From a Memory is, maybe they don't want to make something they don't think can top that, especially since Mike Portnoy isn't in the band anymore, who was a big source of creativity. At the very least I'd like to see them make another epic piece, something really progressive, long and inspired, similar to A Change of Seasons, Six Degrees, or Octavarium.

I would say all their music since Six Degrees has the same kind of Petrucci riffing and Rudess weebely woopy sound. Petrucci needs to step away from his generic riffing and heavy distortion sound to keep me interested. I barely even play their last 2 records.

I get where you're coming from. While I don't think it's a bad album, there's nothing off of ADTOE that's on my main playlist, but The Best of Times and The Count of Tuscany off BC&SL are both solid tracks imo. The solo on The Best of Times is the best solo from Petrucci I've heard.

They ofcourse do have great parts on those albums, I mean they are still talented mofos. But the album as a whole doesn't interest me at all anymore. I listen more to Porcupine Tree etc. now a days.

I love PT as well, and can't wait for Steven Wilson's solo album.

I don't have time to indulge in DT any more really. Nor do I have the urge to either.

I'm listening to a lot of blues-y and folk-y stuff at the moment.

Haven't been here in a while. Looking for the name of a song whose name escapes me, but part of the solo has JP using the whammy bar and pulling it upwards, might be part of a solo. Can anyone help?!

You gotta be more specific than that.

I really don't know how I could be without uploading some ridiculous recording... but yeah... solos with whammy bar in them! gogogogog

EDIT: Think it's probably a mix of a few songs but still

yeah that could be like one of hundreds of solos lol

but maybe if it was probably a mix of a few songs and he pulled upwards on the whammy it was the razor's edge portion of the Schmedley Wilcox

So my Metropolis 2000 DVD finally arrived, cracking stuff. The bonus material is new to me, never got around to YouTube'ing it. Scenes From A Memory is my favourite Dream Theater album, the concept is cool and I find the music pretty compelling.

Probably had this topic a hundred times before in here but your favourite DT album(s)?

Like many I imagine, my two favorite are Images and Words and Scenes From a Memory, with the latter being an absolute prog masterpiece imo.

Six Degrees is one of the best ones for me. I kinda can't stop listening to A Dramatic Turn of Events these days though, lol. Hate me, but that might be my favourite from them.

That said, I never really (again, hate me) took the time to get into Images and Words. God, what a horrible fan I am :/

I think it has to be Six Degrees. I like most, if not all the songs on there. Systematic Chaos is a close second if we're going by the number of songs that we like. Otherwise, I think it'd be Images and Words. Metropolis and Under a Glass Moon are too amazing to not make it my favourite. That first chorus in Take The Time is also fantastic.

Also, did you guys know they're working on a new album? I came across a video posted by their Facebook page asking whether JM would be writing lyrics on the next album. He said yes, but I think that's quite beside the point.

I'll never forget when I first listened to Metropolis Part II and just being blown away by the whole album---The interludes, musicianship, the theme and pretty much everything else. As time's gone on though, I can't say I listen to it that much anymore and songs like ''Through Her Eyes'' and ''The Spirit Carries On'' kind of grate on me a bit. That said, as a whole, the album is a pretty towering achievement I feel.

As, DT albums go---and this is pretty unoriginal---I think Images and Words and Awake are pretty much crystalline audio perfection. The production, songwriting, playing and lyrics are all first class in my opinion. ''Scarred'' and ''Learning to Live'' both take some beating in my book.

Oddly enough--for a band so associated with albums--I prefer individual DT songs these days:
A Change of Seasons
Solitary Shell
Octavarium
Hell's *******
Lines in the Sand
Breaking All Illusions
The Ministry of Lost Souls

And many others all get a pretty heavy rotation on my playlists.
All in all, the consistent quality of their output is incredible I think.
