I remember thinking the same thing. This is why I'll probably never register with the place. The easiest way to build a community is to allow people to stick out. The way UG and other forums are setup allow me to just glance at an avatar and know who it is that is posting. On reddit, you have to memorize the username and the chances of you seeing the same name twice is less likely as most people just look at the funny picture and move on. Doesn't help that the comment format is arguably the most annoying that I've ever seen. Quoting and a true time line of comments FTW.
