welcome back quaned and nico.

Eddy, do you have a pretty good handle on the 11R? im enjoying the hell out of mine, especially after i did the expansion pack. thing is, and isnt this always the thing, but im having trouble dialing in a great heavy rhythm tone. i think i have some problem with my ears lol. i keep dialing things in to a certain sound, then i double track some test riff and i hear it back and realize it sounds like complete shit. it sounds kind of white noise-ish and harsh, yet lacks the proper high freqs to sound clear and to cut through properly. its like i need to zap my brain and completely redefine what's "good". and then every time i watch a demo vid from Ola Englund mic'ing a marshall MG for example, i just want to take all my shit back to the music store and go to the casinos with the extra cash

My experience with Pod Farm and the Pod HD stuff is that it won't ever really sound all that heavy unless it's in a mix with bass and drums. Which is also why Ola's clips of those cheap, terrible amps sound fine. Great guitar being played by a great player through an amp that is being backed by bass and drums. If you were in the room with the amp, it would probably sound absolutely terrible.

dingle does/did 11R videos. Maybe you can get some tips from his clips.

EDIT: Musiciansfriend sent me a one-use 20% code that expires in a few days. I can get a Green Rhino OD for $100 or a OD808 for $120. Both New. Tempted.

but ola always does part of his vids where it is just the guitar track, most of the time panned to one side, and even then it has the perfect amount of growl and everything and doesnt sound harsh. that MG video sounded better than anything heavy ive recorded

A bit like lemur, I feel like a guitar tone can NOT sound perfect without the proper bass and drum mixed. Guitar alone to me will either sound too thin or have too much gain, it can never be perfect.. It takes a certain mix of luck, foreseeing and experience to be able to dial in a merely good enough heavy tone IMO.

Everyone knows a guitar can't sound great both by itself and in a mix with the same settings

I had an MG. Sounded nothing like that. Ola is...

A wizard.

Here's what you should do. Create the ugliest, most disgusting tone you can. Then record it and double track it. Might sound brutal.

^thats about what im gonna do. i think for starters i just need to make one that sounds too muffled and give that one a go.

what kind of frustrates me is for that anthrax cover vid, i think my tone is actually really good. but that was with the stock ESP designed pickup in the horizon. i put the full shred bridge in there and it sounded completely different

but yeah you guys are right, and im sure ive read it before. the tone will sound much different with drums n bass in the mix. i remember a while back, littlemurph posted up a badass song he did and he said most of the badass tone came from the bass.

Bass guitar is a bad way to describe the instrument. It should be called "mixballs".

Never heard or used the Green Rhino but the Maxon is a fantastic pedal. Definitely goes highly recommended from me.

i hear lots of good talk about the maxon. wolverine have you used the ibby TS9 as well? im curious how they compare. overall ive liked my ts9 but it does sort of add this harsh top end to my already white noise-ish rhythm tone so maybe something slightly warmer would suit me better.

and oh by the way, if theres any soilwork fans present, the new album is SICK.

Sorry mate, never tried the TS9. From what I've heard they're pretty similar though.

Been addicted to Whitechapel's 2012 album and Fred Brum's Atonement.

I wish I was that good...

Any good metal albums for inspiration?

I've been listening to This or the Apocalypse's album Dead Years non stop for several months now, albums rarely hit me so hard but I just love everything about it. More of a metalcore/hardcore thing, but anyways, maybe some of you will dig it.

I also can't wait for the new The Color Morale release to drop. These guys have incredibly inspirational lyrics.
