Smile Zombat's Guitar Journal

Howdy, y'all!
its been a fair amount of time since I've stopped back at this site. The last school year has been particularly busy with school, social life, hygene and playing shows, but I managed to do a couple things and now that its summer I'll end up finishing what I started oh-so-long-ago.

Some of you may recall that I was working on an explorer-shaped bass. That's been finished, and sold off to the commissioner. Here's a bad photo of it next to his other thunderbird:

I'll see if I can get a higher res, better lit picture and post that up later.

It works fine, sounds good, the only problems I've been having are with the height of the strings and bad pots. Slowly adjusting the trussrod to fix the neck bow, but I'm realizing that perhaps two trussrods might have worked well.

I had another project that I've been working on, that I haven't posted here because I was squeamish with the design that was completely my own, that I wanted to keep uh, secret.

Considering that most of the work is done, I figure I'd post what I have and update you on the progress of polishing, installing hardware, and wiring.
Intially i was going to sell it to a guy in texas, but he became a real dick and wasn't very accomodating with timeframe. So the end result is I get to keep it which I wanted to do originally so I'm happy.

My Baby:

Back is mahogany, outside is curly maple, followed by Wenge, then Purpleheart, then Wenge. Neck (not pictured) is curly maple, with a redwood stripe down the center, (very unobtrusive) and rosewood fretboard with mother of pearl circle inlays.

I plan on installing two Gibson PAF's with two Volume Control Knobs, and one Tone Knob. The pickup rings (not pictured) are made of bloodwood.

Hopefully she'll be done by the end of this summer.

I also have plans for a semihollow 8-string bass (octaved strings) that I'll be starting this summer.

I don't really like the tip of the body. But the whole thing looks amazing. I really like the explorer too.

I had a design like that in mind. I would feel awful building mine now.

Ah, what the hell. Nice to have your build skills on here.

BTW, my guitar will be I think Korina and maple. Perhaps in a dark wine stain. I totally dig that stripe, man. Keep up the excellent work.

That Explorer is way gorgeous. I'm seriously loving the headstock design, actually. And the stylings. The only thing that's not perfect is the tailpiece... But I don't think I know of any that suit it better, so I guess it can't be helped.

Thanks all!

Pikka - well eventually I plan on having a piece of metal attached that would continue the back of the bridge to the botom line of the guitar, a faux tailpiece to even things out

Did you use any stiffening rods of any type? Might be part of the problem.

And your guitar is going well. Gotta love purpleheart and wenge.
