Depends.
For me yes. For others no. I believe that University is for some and not for others. |

Deciding to go to 'Uni was the best thing I ever did. I LOVE it. Work a bit, party a lot. Fair enough I only just scraped through this year, and next year I'm going to have to work a lot more, but it's worth it.
EDIT: And I'll get an awesome job at the end of it [assuming I graduate], which is always a bonus.

It's a big decision, one you really should think about a lot instead of asking a forum's opinion, especially this one. I guess it really depends on what you want to do as a career and how committed you are to that.
Personally I think that in contemporary society a lot of people have degrees and the amount of unskilled work is constantly going down, so it has to be considered. I'm personally off to University this Spetember to study Psychology for 3 or 4 years and I can't wait. |

Good for those who want it. I disagree with the whole mentality of Uni = necessity encouraged by educational services... especially in the UK/US. Not everyone can be a doctor, lawyer or architect. And there has been a big drop in the amount of people doing skilled manual work because of people going to Uni and getting white collar jobs... or, not, because there's so much competition for work.
I know so many people who have come out of Uni with their shiny new teaching or legal degree and can't find work because three quarters of their generation has done the same. I know people who came straight out of school or college, got a job with what qualifications they had, and now own houses, cars and some are even starting families. That said, I didn't go to Uni because I'm a no-good dropout bum. Maybe I'm bitter.

Uni was always the route I wanted to persue and for the majority of people in my year, they will be going. It should be great when I begin next year.

depends on what sort of career you want. if you want to be hired by a big business and work your way up to the top, yey. if you want to make your own business and fight your way into success and riches, then probably. if you want to be a big burly builder, then probably ney.

I totally think that higher education is worth it.
I already have my B.Sc in biochemistry and I'm going to to Optometry in the fall. It'll work out to almost 10 years by the time i'm done, and worth every penny. The highest paying jobs require higher education. Not to mention freedom to work where you want and more flexible schedules. Like I have friends making 100000 dollars a year + in alberta, canada. However they live in camps, half cut off from society and they work 50+ hour weeks. Not to mention they have to go for 6 weeks and come home for two. The money is out there in skilled trades, but once the industry depletes itself it's going to be alot harder to get jobs.

I like the idea of uni.

I went to university, mainly because I felt it was the next thing to do, not really putting much thought into it.
I quit after 4 months because I hated it. I lived with total and utter rejects and I just didn’t like the work. I feel though that as time goes on Degrees are going to be seen as a must more than a bonus. Which is a bummer for me. However, it’s not all rosy. My brother has a 2:1 in biology and psychology and hasn’t found a good job for years. He’s £10k in debt and has a crap job. It’s even worse nowadays; £30k of debt is more likely. It all depends on the person. If you have a goal, an aim, and are willing to work hard then go for it. Part of me wishes I had done an apprenticeship, a skilled job. But then I see the types of people that do them and it puts me off. (Mainly chavs)

I'm just gonna go through the motions of it. Probably won't get anything out of it though, but I figure I might as well do it if my parents are paying for it.

If you want the sort of jobs that uni'll get you into, thats great.
Same as Daft I'm hoping to go to the same uni as him, and I've been up at open days and the uni seems great lifestyle to have for 4 or 5 years. I want to do a MSci in Physics which'll get me into jobs that could never have got if hadn't done uni/ or MB in medicine which will get me a job not possible through any other means. The average wage of a person with a degree is higher than the average for people without uni degree. Saying that some people have the skills to open successful businesses with no business degrees, and such. Its up to you. I'm giving higher education a go anyway and if I don't like it I can always drop out but if I don't go, it'd be very hard to then get back into it in a few years (if I don't go this year it'll be ebcause I'd be taking a year out to apply for medicine in other universities if I didn't get the grades for Medicine and didn't think Physics was the way forward, which is the only problem I've met in choosing, medicine at lower grade req uni, or Physics in N.Ireland as I am interested in Physics but no idea what job oppurtunites are like). I know I got a job in a supermarket at start of week, and already I know I'll enjoy it fine for the summer but it is not a job I'd have desire to work at for more than summers. I'd not do this job full time in the hope of a wage to keep myself, because the money would be poor.

Im at uni to as a back up for when I leave. I want to make it in music but if I dont I need a degree to get the jobs that pay well (even if I have to go back to do a refeshers course).... The choice is yours and you need to think hard. Uni really isnt for everyone.
Im lucky in a way that I had a direction years before uni that I still want to pursue. I took the safe option to do what I want to do. |

Why would you ever want to stop learning?
I think this question can be answered completely independent of the formalized education system, universities included.
