I'm srsly it isn't the outlet. That would mean the grounding on my outlet here, my friend's garage outlet (through a multiplug adapter!) and Rawshik's outlets are messed up. It's something with the way pickup instruments work in general.

Yeah that sounds like a problem with the grounding. Could be the outlet, could be your entire house.

As for why it's causing a voltage in the strings, I really have no idea. Maybe some current is traveling up the ca ble and into the coils of the pickups. Since we're likely looking at AC voltage, the current is varying with time and therefore a magnetic field is being generated by the coils themselves. The changing magnetic field is causing some potential (relative to you) to be built up in the strings.

Sorry man. Seen the show but I can't remember what was the presentation style. Let's just assume 1000 Ways to Die uses very bad puns.
