I think the term became watered down because people were focusing on amps' ability to clean up and have that push and pull from clean to break up to crunchy. And that little characteristic has been mimiced by a lot of these pedals. Take my ocd for example. it's fairly transparent, but not completely. And I can easily clean it up with my volume knob or pick attack. So my brain goes right to "amp like" even though it doesn't sound like my amp cranked. So it's easy to just slap on that label and have people that don't know better thinking that the pedal must be so awesome because it sounds just like an amp!!!11!

The ability to clean up with your volume knob really isn't that rare. Lower the signal going into a device, and the resulting signal will be smaller in amplitude as well. The only exceptions are pedals with ludicrous amounts of gain coming from one stage, which aren't terribly common, and if they are, they tend to be sensitive to source impedance, so they clean up anyways.

Well that's actually part of the point. Part of why it''s so watered down. Any pedal that doesn't drastically alter your tone And cleans up well is considered amp like.

I know I didn't really say that in the first post but eh. I'm tired. Lol

Never understand why people want dirt pedals to "clean up well" anyway. If I want cleans, I'll turn the damn thing off.

Oh my ****ing god he just goes on and on..

Defamation of the business does, because if you make stuff up and hijack our hashtags for some 'beef' or some made up assumption to prove in the public domain. I will make sure I tell you first. I also deal with it in the west. Attempting to bring our business into disrepute, you have a lot to learn. If you won't change it, that's upto you. I will bring it to people's attention though. You are ignorant and that's that, you want to do your research.. Keep up the good work on your pedals, we have nothing against the boutique market, don't make stuff up though. That's irresponsible and very amateur. I see are you are a one man business, it will never grow beyond your narrow mind, we learn from our past and move forwards. I suggest you do the same. Focus on what you do and not what we are doing. Thanks.

ah ok. yeah it was probably the tubescreamer i was asking about.

I think i'm ok now with the visual sound. I generally just set the thing like a tubescreamer anyway, it's nice to have the extra options, but if you're paying more for stuff you probably never use...

yeah. pedals are great fun, and i like them, but it's generally pretty obvious that you're using a pedal all the same.

+1

Virtually all of my pedals clean up just fine, or at least about what you'd expect for how much distortion I have dialled in on them. And I'm not exactly running ueber-boutique pedals here.

Slight tangent, but it always annoys me how TGP types act like high gain amps don't clean up well. "Oh it doesn't clean up as well as my vintage Fender." No shit, if you could dial that amount of distortion into that blackface fender it wouldn't clean up either.

What I also find kind of bemusing is how these types also say "My vintage-style low gain amp cleans up much better with the guitar's volume knob." I dunno about anyone else, but I can get most of those vintage-style non-master volume amps to clean up just by picking more quietly. I don't have to go near the guitar volume knob.

I kind of get the feeling they're full of it.

Nah I can understand it ok, personally now that I'm used to it I'd rather use my guitar volume knob than kick a pedal, there's less chance of me doing something stupid like falling over or kicking the wrong pedal etc.

and wow tim
