I'm kind of glad he did though, since this is like the one thread where I've ever agreed with something StewieSwan said about metal.

53.2 metal bands per 100,000 people.
Average Finnish metal band has 10 members, so 532/100,000 people are in metal bands.
One in 200 people in Finland are in a metal band.

That means that .2% of the Finnish population plays säkkipilli in a metal band.

Nightwish is the best of Finnish mainstream rock radio bands

This does a good job of it for me, but I'd also like to add:

- Colosseum
- Finntroll
- Circle of Ouroborous (much potential, ruined by their production; if you're gonna try the Lo-Fi approach, do it well.)
- Hanging Garden
- Oranssi Pazuzu
- Ikuinen Kaamos
- Moonsorrow

There are tons of great metal bands. Like... tons. Pretty much the best death metal (especially brutal and technical), the best thrash, the best stoner and sludge metal, and plenty of other great stuff in between. Though I suppose there is a general lack of several other subgenres like funeral doom and folk metal, and even of the "black metal" bands from the US are pretty meh/not actually black metal.

Well, yeah, I agree. We have some great metal. Our "Black Metal" though isn't Black Metal; and, as you mentioned, there's very little Funeral Doom or Folk Metal. (The US sucks as Folk to begin with. The closest we got is "Americana" [which can be ok in small doses] or maybe "Bluegrass" [which isn't really my thing]. ) The US seems to do great with things that either started here or were brought over here soon after they started in Europe, like Death Metal or Sludge Metal. We've also started a lot of really bad Metal "fads", like modern "Metalcore"*.

That said, I love US metal. I just don't love how a lot of people in the US are VERY ignorant of the US Metal scene (outside of the latest "Metalcore" band). We've some excellent bands, and most of them are completely unknown to 75% of people, because the latest "pop star" is more important to them.

Btw, modern "Metalcore" isn't really Metalcore. Metalcore stands for Metallic Hardcore. What about bands like As I Lay Dying or All That Remains screams "Metallic Hardcore"? NOTHING! /rant

US has Agalloch and Falls of Rauros, they're amazing.

Also, I'm glad there are still people who know the difference between real metalcore and that what passes under that label nowadays.

Indeed they are. In general though, the US Funeral Doom, Black Metal, & Folk Metal scenes suck. About 90% of good Funeral Doom, Black Metal, & Folk Metal comes from Europe. Which I'm ok with.

You can thank the Metal forums guys for that.
