Peavey 6505/5150 4x12 Cab vs Mesa Cab.

I'm looking in to finding a 4x12 cab for my new Peavey 6505+ head. My main concern is finding that good deep metalcore type distortion, with a deep bassy tone like you hear from bands such as KSE, Shadows Fall, Etc.

How is a Peavey cab, going to compare to the more expensive Mesa cabs?? Is there a huge diff?

The oversized Mesa cabs have a deeper bass from the larger internal dimensions.

Where do you live and what is your budget? Willing to go used?

I found a Peavey 5150 4x12, like new I can buy for $300. It seems like the Mesa stuff is at least double that.

I'd suggest looking at Avatar cabs. They are similar in construction to mesa and you can custom order them with whatever speakers you want. I got one and love it. Nick Hipa from As I Lay Dying uses them. Getting a cab with v30's will be important if you want to nail that tone.

You're probably going to want something better than the stock speakers in the 5150 4x12. The cabinet itself is perfectly fine, it's the speakers that let it down. That's why you see so many metal guitarists using Mesa 4x12 Rectifier cabs paired with a 5150/6505. So it's probably worth getting a good cab that already has good speakers to match up with your amp. Big fan of V30s when I had my 6505. So you'd be looking at the Mesa 4x12, Marshall 1960AV (V=V30 speakers), Orange or another brand that uses them.

Both of those are the 'traditional' size, so not as large as the 'standard'.

Not worth it to buy the 6505 cab for $300 and still needing to sink $150x 4 into better speakers.

Would a Mesa Stiletto be comparable to the recto cabs?

Stiletto is the traditional size cab. Probably trade off more bass for more finely controlled bass.

^ What this guy said. I own a 6505+ and tested it with various cabs. I've played the Peavey Supreme cab, and the 6505 series cab and neither compared to anything with V30's.
I tested mine through a low-end Hughes and Kettner cab, Mesa over-sized, Mesa standard, Bogner Extacy cab, and Orange PPC412.
The over-sized was definitely the muddiest, the Hughes and Kettner was the weakest, the Mesa standard was ok (I used one for months - I definitely prefer the slant) but the Orange and Bogner cabs were by the far the best, although out of your price range.

tl;dr I would recommend either a Mesa standard from GC or Avatar with V30s, as that is the closest build to an Orange cab with the thick cabinetry.

Those are good cabs, they are the standard Marshall 1960 size. For the price you can get them used, they are totally worth it.
