As someone who was raised Catholic and knows many many Catholics, in my experience, many people think the Catholic Church as an organization is pretty disgusting.

I know the church my family went to has almost know one going anymore. I mean, I haven't been to church outside of weddings and funerals in years, but according to my mom, who recently stopped going, the Sunday masses are almost empty when they used to be full. About half of the Catholic schools in my area have closed in the last two years. I think people are sick of the church as an organization since they are covering up pedophiles and are only interested in making money. Apparently Philadelphia was covering up a bunch of the priests and sending them to other churches when they would get in trouble. It's despicable.

I just find it interesting that all these people still will say they are Catholic or are "spiritual", if you will, but no longer want to support this organization. Good for them I think.

I was trying to relate this to what was being discussed but kind of failed I think. Oh well

You know times are bad when even God is laying people off.

Anyway, I want this guy to be the next Pope:

(Damon Pope from Sons of Anarchy for anyone that doesn't know)

His surname is Pope, so he's halfway there. I'd say he's make a pretty good Pope

He should not take any silly Latin nickname and just go by the name Pope Pope. That would be pretty dope

To be honest I can't argue with you about how wrong it all is. All I can say is that until this man stepped up, it wasn't for the Vatican to deal with these situations - it was for individual dioceses to sort out. I'm talking about in JPII's day, the man everyone loves. Has he done enough? no, not by along shot. Has he laid down a foundation that the next pope can choose to build upon or to ignore? of course he has

Honestly, I think it's better that he does step down because he's really upset a lot more of the pragmatic-minded Catholics and non-Catholics alike with his statements and actions, and protecting those who commit sexually abuse didn't really help his reputation either.

He's gross and looks like Emperor Palpatine, good riddance. Although I don't care about the whole thing. The church is more irrelevant by the day. They'll pick another boring old man and the downward trajectory will continue.

What are you on about; it's not for the dioceses to deal with them nor the Vatican, it's for these people we have called police. The Vatican should play no role in it.

This isn't a fucking complex topic to find rules for, it's not some weird theological conundrum or moral issue. It's extremely cut and dried, if you are a priest and you hear that someone is/has/is planning to rape a child, or touch a child, or go download some child porn, then you report the fucker to the local police.

The church does not need special rules on this, the fact that you can't see that immediately should worry you.
