Can anyone recommend any decent pedals for a bass effects novice?

A Zoom multi-effects pedal (or similar) is best for beginners as it has every effect you could want to sample (before you fork out for the real deal) as well as usually having a built in drum machine and a headphone-out socket.

They're pretty sturdy too, iirc. I ended up selling mine after about 5 years' constant use.

(One with a pedal built in is a plus too.)
