How about under rated guitarist like Glenn Proudfoot, he is amazing and has so many different playing styles that he is like a ten in one guitarist

John Mayer? Really? If anything, the dude is underrated. Sure, he isn't the most innovative as far as tone goes, nor does he play really fast licks to show case how good he is. But he is one of the best working right now in my opinion. I have a plethora of videos I want to show to prove my point, but this one in particular is a big one:

Shredding really means nothing, I've been playing five or six years, and am incredibly unimpressed with shredding. I can shred if I give myself some time to look over the tabs and practice, but I've been working on Neon for a while now and still can't figure out how the hell he does it. I encourage you to learn either Neon or Who Says, then tell me he's overrated. If you really want to go balls to the wall, try to cover Gravity, and translate the emotion half as well as he does.

Also, as a side note, as far as creativity goes, he's really up there. A lot of guys out there stick to a formula and play it safe and hit some unorthadox chords. John Mayer on the other hand throws just about everything in the chord book at you.

But then again, I'm more of an acoustic guy, so I may just appreciate his work in particular because the greats almost all play electric.

Check out number two on this list, it explains it much better than I ever could. http://www.cracked.com/blog/5-rock-...al-geniuses_p2/

i don't think john mayer deserves all the love or the hate he gets. he's a pretty good guitarist and an alright song writer. i think most the attention he gets is because of his highly publicized personal life.

lets be honest, all of the known guitar players are overrated, once a band goes famous the media, tv, radio, etc. will make them seem like their somekind of gods or like there not from this planet, and people buy it, they think their the best thing in the world and will fight and defend the illusion they've been sold, I've done it in some point most of you guys have done it too, thats how the music business works. Also, some guitar players will try to aproach a new style or try something different in a new album, but sometimes it wont work and their fanbase would moan "yeah it ok but its not the same as their earlier work" or " this sucks" "they've lost it" etc. and then these blind fans demand the same sound that they suposedly fell in love and players would stick too a single style because thats the one that got them famous gives them money and record labels demand them to do so they can still sell a product. So the real point I'm trying to get to is: just enjoy what you like, but dont idolize o see them as if theres no one better, open your mind to new music styles, and artists and listen to different guitar players and not the same mainstream music. Music is not a damn competition, its not who's better playing a thousand notes o who does weird scales, in my point of view everthing depends on the listener and his taste, I have my favourite bands that i love but for someone else it they may be rubbish, and thats ok, like i said music is not a horse race and not everyone will dig what you like, so its not about who is better its about enjoying music by listening to what you love, simple as that...
