The way I learned comes from tuvan throat singing as crazy as it sounds. (Which I also use for warm-ups, see kargyraa.)

It engages the false chords as would the scream, but uses less distortions, can be initiated using a soft "clearing my throat" sounds and is gradual, you can modulate the intensity. I thought it was intuitive compared to "yell and push and do that sound I can make..." from the random youtube videos I saw back then.

That's all false chord though...
