I think that I idealize & romanticize it a bit when I think that it can be a philosophy, but the root of it is simply a subculture. Every culture must have some sort of philosophy, and the main thing in this one is thinking however you want while disregarding the status quo. Rebellion, anti-authoritarian (not authoritative), and a certain simplicity. The Minutemen, Fugazi, the Dead Boys, Steve Albini, the Locust, - all punk as **** with different means.

I think it also means to largely do things using your own means. DIY. This is manifested in the vests and jackets, but can appear elsewhere. I like to do so without potentially hurting many in the process since I'm accustomed to this American life that seems to tread and exploit others, but alas, I live in Western society where true anarchism is not possible. Independent labels and making your own music are obviously important aspects. Sure, the Ramones and the Clash were all on big labels but that was early on in punk rock and it has evolved since then.

Punk is playing power chords fast with a lot of substance abuse. And I LIKE it that way.

^Why not? Doesn't not being punk in a punk band make you a poser?
