How high should I set my bridge for 08/09 string gauges ? Right now I just adjust it so I can play without any discomfort, but I'm looking for specifics

also I need help with saddles, where do I move them ? what does moving it toward the neck do, and away? I think towards is +pitch and away is -pitch but I have no idea, I read on intonation and there isn't anything specific besides some people saying "move your saddles"

well, look at the first post of this thread. identify the type of guitar you have.

when you swap strings, make sure you swap one string at a time.

then check the neck's relief. see if you have enough, with lighter strings.

also, sliding the saddles back and forth is a bad idea.
you need to tune the open string, check the tuning at the 12th to see if it matches, then make slight adjustments.

when players suggest adjusting the saddles, they usually mean to raise the saddles, to clear fret buzz.

I have a tom type of bridge

I think my relief is fine, I've never had any issues with buzzing, one thing that's an issue are wolf tones, but they don't come out of the amplifier, but the guitar itself. I still don't know where to move the saddles, what if at the 12th fret, it's flat? Where do I move the saddle?

I'm pretty sure my guitar has bad intonation in the lightest string, because I feel like I have to bend the note up a bit so it stays in tune, but this may be just a guitar thing I'm not too sure. When I played sax there are times where you have to adjust your mouth a bit so it stays in tune, might be something similar.

if you have problems at certain frets, that could be problems with the fret or the string.

how to intonate is explained on the first page of this thread.

Howdy,

Just grabbed a new guitar(bolt on neck) I am just about to set up, (adjust action etc) is there any point in the following:

Is it worth installing nut inserts into the neck?

I've seen it suggested that it's worth resetting the neck, is it worth doing and if so how?

Many thanks.

you don't shim a neck unless there's a reason to.

you play the guitar, set up the guitar and shim it if there's an issue with the angle of the neck.
but that's not that common.

I have a epiphone les paul jr. For a while my high e string wasn't staying in tune. After switching out a few strings I found out that it wasn't the string and that the tuning peg was loose. How do I go about tightening the peg so that it stays in tune? Thanks

there is a nut on the stem that protrudes from the neck, that can be tightened, but probably isnt the issue.

if there are no other little screws in the tuning machine, or running into the turning piece, then it's all enclosed and the tuners may need to be replaced.

you can try to find one, for the correct side of that guitar headstock, or you can buy a set and swap them out.
not a hard thing to do, provided you measure and get the right size, and you can look into locking tuners, which is a nice upgrade.

Any chance there's a way of checking if these tuners will fit straight in my PRS SE Akesson or if some work will need to be done to fit them?

Yes they fit.

Here is a review from the page you linked:

Replaced my new PRS SE 245 tuners with Schaller M6. These can install to PRS as originals, without any rebuilding. After replacement, Schaller tuners seems to be a little tiny dimensions, but it does not affect the usability. The result: my guitar thomann stay in tune very long time now. And it perform why this hardware is created. Recommended.

whenever in doubt when upgrading parts, always contact the site via email, talk to a tech there and they should be able to answer all your questions.

if it's not the amp, could be a loose jack or bad cable?

roll the knobs, jiggle the cable, and try a different cable.

Thanks guys, should have checked that haha. Think I'd given up on even looking for reviews on Thomann.
