Pretty depressing with the amazing Pluto flyby today and all I've read all day is "hurr durr pludo IS a planit screw nasa".

Like, it legitimately makes me angry.

That debate generates far more controversy than anyone on either side should be proud of.

It matters to people who are interested in astronomy.

I would say that it isn't inconsequential to planetary scientists

It's regrettable that despite all the programs and discoveries lately, the obtruding discussion is an argument over semantics and classifications by scientific authorities. These do very little to advance our understanding of the universe imo.

Well they do little to advance YOUR (the layman) understanding.

Then I insist on being insulated from recondite discussions that might belittle my understanding.

Regardless, really looking forward to today's results.

So there was a public campaign to name the features on Pluto and Charon after fictional and non fictional creations, and a few months ago I nominated "Pillar of Autumn" in the Fictional Vessels category. It was NOT selected, or even really discussed.

http://www.ourpluto.org/charon-theme-3

NASA sucks, Pluto sucks, and space sucks.

I don't think anyone is "surprised". Just annoyed.

On the Pluto bit

http://www.spaceflightinsider.com/m...anetary-status/

I do hope that as a governing body the IAU passes some more coherent and thought-out "definitions" for planets and classes therein, the whole thing is a bit loose right now.
