That showed infront of Gatsby last night. I haven't watched it, but isn't Sofia Coppola behind that too?

Sure. People need to realize that it's all pop art. Once you accept that, you'll enjoy more mainstream movie, and won't be disappointed when TDKR isn't a work of art.

A lot of people tend to talk about a film based on something that it's just not. You go in expecting something, or thinking it should be a certain way, and then when it's not that way people rail on it for sucking because it wasn't what they thought it would/should be, and completely neglect to talk about the film it actually was.

For sure. I try my best to go in with no expectations, because then you're not projecting anything on the movie. Like if you go in expecting a movie to be bad, it's gunna be bad. If you expect it to be good, it's easier to be let down.

Of course that's not always possible.

No, it's Roman, her brother. He co-wrote loads of Anderson's stuff.

You ever think of movements as cyclical? I have absolutely no way of determining if they are since I'm not THAT versed in film/art history, but for some reason it's how I think about it. I think it's because a lot of them want to do the opposite of what the past movement's done, so I think that the next 'fad' is going to be the exact opposite of that. Reaction, opposite reaction, opposite reaction and so on.

If that's the case then this next generation's going to be all about exploitation films lol.

Exploitation movies were never really mainstream.

It seems like it's already a trend too, Gaspar Noe does it, Refn does it, Tarantino, Rodriguez, Soderbergh.

Ali, if you look at the 'movements' in film it's mostly caused by a need to express or react, German Expressionism wanted to show the effects of WWI, Film Noir for WWII and the influence from Expressionism, Italian Neo Realism was a result of WWII and Hollywood, French New Wave was a reaction against Hollywood with the influence of Neo Realism, New Hollywood was a reaction against old Hollywood with the influence of French New Wave, since then there hasn't been many 'movements' because film making has become easier and Hollywood knows what people want, since Jaws dropped how much has it changed?

Art/European cinema has it's own audience and Hollywood does too, since there isn't any competition then there's no need to adapt and evolve.

It's more like dressed up exploitation rather than purely exploitation movies.

I wouldn't even call it exploitation, it's just working in genre, with a bit of the directors own stylistic flair.

Since Jaws and other high concept films I guess people have flocked towards the 'indie' styled films.

Also, has anyone watched Detention? That shit is incredible. In some ways it reminds me of Scott Pilgrim vs The World, actually it does in a lot of ways, but it's really funny and totally stands on its own as this amalgamation of high school films. It operates as a slasher film, a time travel film, a high school flick, and a postmodern and self-aware look at these genres. Somehow it worked, and for some reason it was really fun. It kind of moves really fast, like it's meant for the internet generation, and it's constantly throwing ideas and references at you. I'm not even sure what it was about. I might watch it again right now lol

Actually, it was sort of trying to do the same thing as 21 Jump Street, it just took it to a whole other level. Watch it and see what I mean.

Haha I should have known!

It's the sort of film which you'll either really love or absolutely despise in the first scene. I freaking loved the first scene.

So I've watched three films since the start of the year:

Up - 9/10
Shame - 8/10
The Social Network - 8/10

I have a good 30 dvds/blu rays I haven't touched yet. I don't know what's wrong with me, the soul destroying job (which I just quit, woot woot unemployed) I worked has killed all my passions and interests. Sad times.

Pretty much. I've read a lot of really negative reviews on it, a bunch of which I saw before I put it on but yeah I fell in love instantly.

My kind of film, may actually watch it this week after I marathon through all the Fast & The Furious Films after I see Fast 6 tomorrow.

I didn't even know Fast Six is out. Have you seen Torque? It's basically Kahn's (the Detention director, in case you didn't know) take on Fast & Furious.

Painting various assortments of wood and metal in a warehouse for 40 hours a week (stay in school kids). Bought a load of films I've been wanting for ages and still haven't watched any of them. My concentration levels are low, can't last past 30 minutes on most films and have no chance with arthouse films. It's odd, trying my best to get back into the whole swing of things, cause I kind of like films.

Nice to be back and all
