also, not justifying racism but back then it obviously was a much less of a deal than it is now.

I'm not even talking specifically about racism and even then "not as much of a big deal much less of a deal than as it is now" is not a good excuse. My point is that Cobb was allegedly not exactly a model citizen, but he was one of the best hitters ever and deserves a spot in the Hall. I feel the same about Bonds and Clemens.

Welp, the Orioles just resigned Davis. 7/161. Guess they wanted their own personal Ryan Howard.

Ryan Howards a good guy atleast, so I don't feel bad about him getting so much money. Idk about Davis so I can't say how he is.

Not saying he deserves the money but if its gonna be wasted on a bad player he might as well get it lol. I remember that one time he flipped out at the umps, was so crazy because nobody had ever seen him do that before and we haven't since lol

I still love those damn phils man.

While I agree, there is $42 million deferred bringing the AAV down to $17 million over the life of the contract.

lol. $25 million each of the past two years for -0.4 fWAR in each season. But he's a nice guy, so that's OK.

howard is way overpaid but they had to do it. He was making next to nothing during his mvp like years and the fans would have gone ballistic if they didn't resign him.

Just didn't work out :/

Nah. Teams should pay for future performance, not past performance. Giants did the same thing with Lincecum and the fans hated it.

Defensive and baserunning liability who relied largely on power for his value (which historically drops off pretty quick as a hitter enters his 30s) and had terrible career strikeout rates entering his age 31 season and they give him 5 years/$125 million. It looks like a ludicrous deal now because of the injuries and terrible seasons, but even then it was bad.

looks like I'm gonna go see a game in CHI this year

Pearl Jam is playing wrigley on August 20th and 22nd, and the Phils are playing the white sox in Chicago on the 23rd. The odds of that happening were so slim, I'm so fucking psyched for that week haha

Enjoy. Loved Chicago and can't wait to go back. I walked something like 10 miles just taking in the sights the one day I was there, the skyline is amazing.

Think I'm going to Atlanta this year to get to Turner Field before the Braves leave it.

Also, Cespedes signed with the Mets. Three years, $75 mil with an opt-out after one year, if he opts out he gets $27.5 million. It's a lot of money but you know what, this move makes it clear that the Mets don't want to let this wealth of pitching go to waste while they're all still young, cheap, and crazy talented. Worst case scenario he's average, accepts the full deal and is gone and off the books in three years. Best case he puts up August-September 2015 numbers and leads the team to another playoff run, he opts out, and we don't have to pay him the absurd price he's sure to get in free agency. Also it's nice to see someone turn down more money because they want to play for the Mets.
