Good question, I might select two from some artists (as per the rules) and one from another. This is a tough one and as we all know our tastes can change depending on what sort of mood we are in, so one day it may well be all heavy rock and on another it could be more melodic stuff. So bearing this in mind I'd like to suggest an amendment to this thread, and that is we all choose ten riffs today and then come back tomorrow or the day after and choose another ten that we may choose on another day or when in a different listening frame of mind, it's just a suggestion and as it's not my thread feel free to dismiss it but I think it would be good to have that expansion on the original idea so we can all list ten equally good riffs that we like as much but maybe have a slightly different flavour from our original choices. Anyway here's my top (for now) ten:

1. Smoke on the Water - Depp Purple
2. Alright Now - Free
3. Highway to Hell - AC/DC
4. Brown Sugar - The Rolling Stones
4. Oh Well - Fleetwood Mac
5. All Night Long - Rainbow
6. Black Night - Deep Purple
7. Paranoid - Black Sabbath
8. Ace of Spades - Motorhead
9. Can't get Enough of your Love - Bad Company
10 - Hocus Pocus - Focus

I've deliberately left Jimi out this time only because I couldn't make up my mind which one to choose, so hopefully by the time of my next list (if allowed) i'll have chosen one or two. There's a few less obvious choices in there but have deliberately included them because they are such classic riffs that every guitarist should have the pleasure of hearing them so if's there is one or two maybe you don't recognise then please get yourself on U-tube, that Focus riff is blinding.

How am I supposed to limit it to only 10? Okay, but there's gonna be some bands used multiple times.

AC/DC - Riff Raff
MetallicA - One
AC/DC - Beating Around The Bush
Black Sabbath - Into The Void
Rush - Limelight
MetallicA - Bleeding Me
AC/DC - This Means War
Guns N Roses - Perfect Crime
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man (yes, you read that correctly)
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

You could always try my suggestion above - that's come up with ten and then come up with another ten on a different day when you're in a different musical frame of mind. I agree with you totally, it's impossible to just come up with ten, our tastes change depending on what mood we are in and what sort of phase we are going through. Some weeks that could be really heavy and then a couple of days or a week or two later it could be slightly more melodic or even heavier. So, going with my own suggestion I am going to try and come up with my next ten.

I can't really think of a top ten but I love sweet child o mine by guns n roses. When I learned it and got it down that was the first time I truly felt like a guitar player. I also love the paint it black by the rolling stones. Its easy but it just sounds cool
