Ya, that's what I was getting at more so. There are huge literacy issues that hold some of these kids back in exams, as questions can be very particular in their phrasing and so on. It's great that there's something to even that out.

Paddy, how are you finding the school and teaching? I worked in a very disadvantaged school and it broke my heart. The days when I'd dealt with kids being knocked about by their parents or made homeless or who didn't have any money for food that day I used to cry in the car on my commute home

Loving teaching so far, although I'm not at it long at all. I still have a year of University to go after this. It's exceeded my expectations though in how much I enjoy it. I teach science, and it's just wonderful to take a chance on doing something interesting or out there and having it work. The school is really good, but even so I try to be a lot more hands on than they're used to. It's challenging though, especially catering for diversity as none of the class groups are streamed in any way.

It's a rough area, one of the most disadvantaged in the country, so there's lots of "long-term absenteeism" and so on. Kids asleep in class is a big one, and to be honest there's not much you can do, they're not asleep because they don't want to learn but because they're exhausted. In older classes particularly you see kids who are not engaged, but there because, as was said to me, "they either come here or they're shooting up in an alley". You can tell them because they're involved in every after school club going, and when they're given detentions you nearly have to kick them out.

I'm guessing it'd be less awesome if you were trying to compete as a non-native speaker. We suck enough already at languages... though most of those languages we're talking about here aren't normally the ones which native english-speakers tend to learn (french, spanish, german). but even in that it's not exactly a level playing field as you have all the eton types who summer in france or wherever who have a pretty hefty advantage too.

But yeah. I know IIRC my dad said that the foreign nationals in his school were top of the class within a couple of months. and he taught french. so they were learning a foreign language in another foreign language. and still kicking ass.

Just realised that in the next few weeks I'll have to cover Evolution with a group of 15-17 year olds, and that there are a subset of the group who do not believe in evolution (they're part of a church that rejects it, I believe).

Finally, my misspent youth in the "Creationism vs. Evolution" thread is of some use...

If I were confronted by a group of young earth creationists in a professional setting I would do my damnedest to come out looking like the bad guy.

you probably wouldn't need to try too hard

seriously, though, you kind of need to look at the bigger picture... you're kind of giving the other side ammunition.

Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.

Give the crazies at the end of the line blanks though.

I'm not going to take a Meths approach to it

It's just meant that I have loads of cool examples of speciation occurring and evidence for evolution that usually don't get covered with Kids.

Somebody almost assuredly has already suggested this or you have already considered it, but a good approach to something like this is nipping it in the bud. Right at the start just say flat out that the students will be tested on the body of scientific knowledge and data related to this subject, so regardless of what their personal beliefs are, they must learn to understand the logic, evidence, extensions, etc. of the theoretical framework established by evolution. This instantly establishes the parameters of the course material, so people who are from another perspective can't even start ridiculous arguments.

I got a job working in the public sector for the summer. Will be interesting after working in the private sector and the charitable sector if there's actually more inefficiency. So far it's been somewhat more efficient, in that their contracts are at least existent and not full of illegal clauses.

Let me know what you find and I can weigh in with what I've noticed in the UK.
