The idea is that you get different scale lengths across the strings, so for the lower strings you can have higher tension and keep the rhythms tight and the higher strings don't end up with the brittle tone and ease of bending that comes with the shorter scales. I've also heard people say that it's slightly ergonomically better since the change in angle of the frets follows the naturally changing position of the hand up and down the neck.
