Picking upstrokes

I just noticed that for a lot of licks and lead lines, i mostly pick with upstrokes. Is that weird?

Shallow and pedantic.

Well there's a couple of considerations:

1 - Is your technique good when you're doing this?
2 - Does it sound good?

If the answer to either of those is no then it's bad, if not then you're good and no one who matters will care.

A bassist I used to play with picked almost entirely with upstrokes, when he wasn't alternate picking. So it's not unheard of, although I tend to teach my students to use downstrokes for single picks. However Rick Graham uses a lot of upstrokes for legato, and I'm not about to criticize his technique!

It is a little unusual, but as long as you can alternate pick consistently when you need to, you're fine.

I play a lot of upstrokes when I play in my band, but every riff I write everything starts before the bar & I naturall start with a upstroke.

Eric johnson plays a lot of his melodies using all upstrokes just as most of the players even those who are strict alternate pickers play their slower lines that want to put emphasis on with all downstrokes.Thats perfectly ok if it doesnt interfere-as it was mentioned- with your alternate(or economy) picking when you have to pick longer faster lines.

My opinion is that if you have practised your inside and outside picking(like you should) you wont be bothered with any picking situation .
