Need Direction with Guitar Study

I'm not a new guitar student, but am not at the intermediate level either. What I need is some direction in what I need to study to progress with the guitar with a focus on becoming a professional player.

There seems to be no end of angles from all sorts of people and organizations selling some unique system they hawk. I just want to get better and am having trouble distinguishing between material and programs that would be helpful and those that would just hold me back and are little more than gimmicks.

Is there a course of study somewhere with guidelines I can follow?

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide in this matter.

I'd try the following sites:

justinguitar.com --
http://truefire.com/blog/ --
deftdigits.com --

...and you can never go wrong with YouTube.

I would stay away from any online package or courses. You're definitely right about those being mostly gimmicks.

All the good stuff is free.

I keep a lot of material that I've written for my students on my site as well. It's linked in my sig.
