That was originally the case, and a lot of bands strive for that sound to emulate the roots of death metal.

That said, some modern death metal has some very sexy tone. New Bloodbath and Black Dahlia Murder spring to mind, some of my favorite tones. Basically achieved by A/Bing a 6505 and a Rectifier. Bloodbath also throws some kind of JCM into that mix. Old school death metal tone on the other hand is just an HM-2 into the best amp they can afford. Peavey Bandit is famous, and old Bloodbath is rumored to be an HM-2 into a JCM2000 of some kind.

Just wanted to clear up that some DM actually has amazing tone.

Also if you're not a fan of those kinds of genres, you may be thinking of black metal, which is by and large shit tone, regardless of era.

Generally speaking, I'm probably thinking of the old death metal and certainly black metal. Not a fan of either, admittedly.

Largely true -- that's what makes it so GOOD! Though I'd argue that later Immortal, Emperor, and Enslaved had/have pretty good tone. At least they went away from the ice-picky/all-treble and gain-maxed settings.

As for death metal, it's all in the eye (or more appropriately, the ear) of the beholder. A nice, smooth tone is not really appropriate for the genre. A ballsy, over-the-top sound fits the bill. Personally, I prefer a more raw, almost messy tone compared to this more modern, trendy djent stuff. It's too clinical for me.

You need to try a Suhr Riot.

Things kick MASSIVE ass.

You could download my album to hear it in a full band mix
/shameless self promotion

But seriously.
The Suhr is one of the best high gain pedals I've ever heard

honestly judging on the tones in the videos posted here i can't imagine that a MXR 10 band (has vol and gain sliders) and if you took your time and got tone from that and used a non TS boost (probably don't want the mid hump and bass loss), i like my timmy for that, but i am sure there are dozens out there. you could probably attain the tone.

as far as the offer for the HM2, email me in a decade and maybe i will be interested on getting rid of it. they are slightly rare and will likely be worth more.

Indeed. Tech death especially. Hell, if you ask me technical death metal sounds like its death metal that has its genitals cut off and replaced with guitar it desperately tries to wank. Vigorous speed and technicality, but kinda lacks the point...

Errr, no offence to Tech death fans. Anata is one of the better bands of the genre anyway.
