That is the primary problem with my Montana property as a retirement retreat; It's 30 miles from the nearest small town, 70 miles from the nearest doctor and the roads are impassable when wet. You can take a boat to a major highway in the summer, but in the winter the only sure method of getting in or out is an airplane, and of course they are weather limited as well. (And where do you leave your boat, and do you leave a vehicle at the landing to be stolen or vandalized etc etc...)

Don't get me wrong, all of these issues have solutions, but it's taken a good chunk of money...

Also, the older I get, the less I like winter, so there's that.

I need a bug out place/farm/ranch with a river nearby, lots of deer, and a migratory path for some geese/ducks. Suggestions? Somewhere West, coast is a plus.

Siskiyou County is selling by the square mile but the area is mostly timber. Mendocino, Lake, and Sonoma Counties are crazy now.

Back when I was using heavy I wanted to build a mead hall. This talk is stupid rubbish, I am not an apple farmer.

What I want is to take half of this paycheck and put it into savings. Fun.

yeah i suppose if you don't have a house there it might not be just as bad in terms of having to keep an eye on it. it's unlikely someone's going to steal your land.

But yeah also listen to arby, that sounds like good advice.

Pictured: a 23.5lb steamed turkey after breast reduction surgery; whole garlic cloves, baby carrots, gross chopped red onions & green onions in mix of lemon juice, chicken stock, Pino Grigio, butter and turkey drippings; oyster dressing; mustard greens, rice.

Not pictured: ravenous familial horde.

My evening's immediate future: deboning turkey for storage and using carcass to make stock.

Just saw this, thought of all y'all discussing building things in the middle of nowhere.

Someone has invented a fabric impregnated with uncared concrete. When water is applied and it is allowed to to dry & cure, the fabric is stiff as...well...concrete.

And they decided to make inflatable tents with it.
https://homes.yahoo.com/news/just-a...-190007764.html

The tents become relatively durable structures that can be erected in just hours by only 2 people, and can provide shelter within 12-24 hours. They have an expected lifespan of a decade.
