I'm reviving this thread for an update. I'm typing very fast with Dvorak now.
Most of the time I have been learning as I go, but in the beginning I used an app called Typist to get into the "preferred" method of typing computer classes teach. Anyone else that switched have an update?

I never knew there was anything else but qwerty. O_O
And it'd be hell to learn a completely new keyboard layout, I mean, I'd be fumbling around everywhere. Hell, its almost as natural as talking at this point. I'm open to new ideas though, I'll pull out an old keyboard and give dvorak a shot for a couple days. Last edited by SlayingDragons : 06-19-2011 at 01:28 AM. |

Try it. I did in the beginning of this thread. I can still type just as fast with QWERTY if the need arises, but I have a faster and more efficient way to type.

But nowhere near as hard as when you first learned QWERTY

But to master it it must have taken quite some time. It would no matter what layout you first learn. The dexterity takes time to acquire.

You mean something like this: Optimus Maximus Keyboard by Lebedev. Quite cool stuff. Oh, and I'm using Swedish QWERTY because it's so much more useful than the Swiss German layout for typing German. Strange but true. Only thing I miss is ° and ç (sometimes). About this Dvorak-Stuff, I tried for a short time to learn the Svorak-layout (Swedish Dvorak), but I found it of no actual use, as the movements were quite uncomfortable in comparison to the QWERTY I'm accustomed to. And it's too much of a hassle to learn to type slightly faster, which is almost a nonexistent gain from my current typing speed. (Btw: Finger dexterity you learn with QWERTY is actually quite useful for a shred-guitarist...) For comparison, you might want to check this site out to put it all in relation to eachother (international): Keyboard writing speed test. Btw: QWERTY is not designed to make you slow, it just isn't designed very thoroughly. Plus it was rather designed for building typewriters easily. Edit: I just managed 495 keystrokes/min and 90 words/min with 0 errors. Edit2: And I can't use dvorak really, as I'm writing (or rather learning to write) with double pinyin layout. Which is also a reason why I can't switch to Win7, as Microsoft changed the input method to a much more impractical one... you can't select tone with 1234 anymore, instead it selects a character from the popup list. That list wasn't shown in XP until you actually wanted to have it and you could just type.

You are wrong about that. I'm not going to retype it all, but basically they needed to slow typists down in order for the keys to not jam.

I didn't know there were other keyboard layouts, I'm going to learn all of them.

So it's been over a year and a half and here I am reporting my results.
Dvorak is awesome. At this point, I would consider myself a proficient user, although I am by no means a speed-typist (nor was I ever). Here is a list of pros and cons for anybody considering making the switch, or who might be on the fence about it. Pros: - You can feel the efficiency of the setup in every word you type. Since the letters are arranged to necessitate less movement, it's also much more comfortable. - Will still be able to use qwerty keyboards (Though there may be a couple of minutes of remembering the layout if you haven't used it for a while) - If you change the layout of your physical keys, people will no longer ask to use your computer, or they will look hilariously stupid if they insist on doing so anyway. - Everybody will think you are a supergenius Cons: - Getting used to it is a hassle. It will take at least a month or two for you to become fully comfortable with it, and another few until you can type without making mistakes. - Most games don't come configured for the Dvorak layout. While this is generally not a problem, games that don't let you rebind keys can be a hassle (especially WASD-controlled games). You can get around this by changing the setting of the keys back to qwerty while you play. It's a bit inconvenient, but not a huge deal. - If you do change the physical layout of your keys, be prepared to explain to everyone who ever sees them what Dvorak is and why you changed. Overall, it may seem like more trouble than it's worth, but I have to say that I have personally enjoyed the change and really like the Dvorak layout better than qwerty. I would recommend switching if you're thinking about it and willing to work through the learning period.
