Bass Investment

Sup chaps,

I've been playing guitar for a good few years and I guess I must have taken a bump on the head or something, but I wanna get into bass playing!

Now then, I'm into funk a lot, but am looking for an instrument that can give me a lot of diversity. Also, my budget is pretty restricted.

In summary, I look to you guys and gals to give me some guidance on my first bass

Used jazz bass of any description (most probs Squier), or a jack-of-all-trades such as a used Ibanez SR300.

A jazz is a great qualifier for a jack of all trades bass too - I've yet to find a genre of music I can't play with a jazz. Probably your best bet, it's pretty much the bass to have for funk, and it'll pull off many other types of music effortlessly. If you your budget allows, look for a Squier VM Jazz bass.

The squier CV's are nice, and they have jazz and p-bass models. Excellent build quality and reasonably priced, the fiesta red p is especially purty

The cheaper Ibanez's aren't as much of lookers as the squiers but play and sound great and can be found used for peanuts.

Used.
Ibanez
BTB 405 (5er) or 400 (4Str)

The Ibanez Pups are quite sufficient, and compared to the Barts introduced in the 450 series, the Barts have a slight compression to them. Thus, these things Rock without restraint.

Neck can be shimmed for outrageously low action (mine has been shockingly stable from 2800ft above Sea Level to Miami, to Iowa to LA and Tx), EQ is 18v with a Variable Mid Sweep.

Has plently of natural brightness for sizzling and blistering Funk. Body Mass can deliver chest poking Thump.

People in the past have tried to get me to sell mine to them.

Seek them in the $400 USD range. I prefer the Blue Quilted Maple, the color selection was not significant.

If you wanna play funk, you can get a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass, and it will serve you well... If you like flea's sound, i recommend you to take a look at Sterling SUB series also. Those are both cheap reliable good sounding basses!

BTW What's your exact budget? Location??

Then look for the aforementioned basses in the used market that's available for you! Good luck!

Get yourself over to the classified section on http://www.basschat.co.uk/ if you're looking used in the UK... best place for it in my experience.
