Do you need your singing teacher to be the same gender as you?

Just curious because I want to take singing lessons but want to make sure I get the teacher I need. If it matters i am a boy, aged 14. Thanks.

I wouldn't say it particularly matters, but I understand why you would want someone of the same sex. Women have very different vocal types than men in terms of range and timbre, which affects the music they sing. I'm a guy, and I would personally be more comfortable with a male teacher simply because they would have a more similar voice than I. On the other hand, a good voice teacher is a good voice teacher, so don't think that gender is everything.

not at all a good voice teacher will know how to work with both male and female voices
but make sure you have a GOOD vocal teacher as your voice is still changing and you can do some damage

I don't know how to tell if a voice teacher is good or not

Absolutely not. I am a girl and I have had a woman and a man for a voice teacher and both have been equally as good and beneficial.

As for telling if a voice teacher is good or not.. just see if you feel like your voice and breathing techniques are improving and if you generally like your teaches. If not, then I suggest to change your voice teacher.

maybe. I find female singers very attractive so it might be a distraction for me. Other than that it wouldn't matter.

On the other hand, if you're used to opposite gender's attention while singing, it'll be a lot easier later

I had a female and it was great. I do think that it maybe may have helped having a male because when she'd demonstrate the notes I was supposed to hit when I was being pitchy, she'd do it effortlessly because of her natural higher range; whereas if it was a male, I feel like I'd see the correct mechanics for hitting the higher notes easier and see that a bit of struggle was necessary.

But it was great, I really don't think it matters too much.
