Talking Best beginner bass and amp?

I have been playing guitar for 3 years and I would like to start playing bass. I am looking for a beginner level bass and amp. I have a budget of 300 dollars, located in San Francisco, and am willing to go used.

Everyone here has there opinions, and there's no 'best' bass really, just a bunch of good ones. Lots of people here like the Squier Vintage Modified and Classic Vibe basses, and they are very good for the price. I prefer the Yamaha RBX series myself, again very solid instruments. There's a guy around here who often recommends Ibanez as well, but I'm not so familiar with those so hopefully he'll show up.
What I would recommend though, is getting a decent amp. If you could get a Squier VM and a 15W - 30W practice combo, or an Affinity and a 100W combo I would always recommend the 100W. 100W as a beginner will last you a good while, I've done gigs on 90W before. Whereas one of those crappy combos will last you until you want to play with people, then it will no-longer cope.

Post #3 on this thread could help with the bass.

And I also second what Spanner said about the 100w Acoustic amp. They can be had for $100, if not less.

That thread is in major need of an update, it's like 5 years old.

the update is being made (slowly...) but those basses keep being the best bang for your buck, so you should read it.

The basses that have been recommended are still a good recommendation, even 5 years later.

Until recently I owned a 1999 Root Beer MM Stingray 5 that I sold in march this year, I've recently bought a Fender Affinity 5 string Jazz Bass for £210, my G&L L2500 has stayed in its gig bag since.

The first bass guitar i got was a Yamaha ERB. i got it 3rd hand, for RM200, which is about USD65? For an amp, i suggest Vox, they have really good amps, loud, and good quality, and not as expensive.
