For now yeah. I've looked at some nice turntables (project debut carbon, Rega RP1) but it would be nice to get some advice from someone who's not here to make commission. Amps and speakers, I don't really have a clue what to go with!

I'll draw you up a list of decks, amps and speakers, as well as suggested cabling. It's just a case of demoing bits. I'll post back in a bit with some stuff.

The MSL version is actually the same price at Superfi, if you prefer a bit more detail coming through.

Right, budget recommendations... as the Carbon has no phono stage, I will only list amps with inbuilt MM phono stages. Amps may be new or recently discontinued, for warranty purposes.

Marantz PM6004/6005. The 6004 has recently been replaced by the 6005. The 6004 will be cheaper, but the 6005 has an onboard DAC, in case you want to use digital sources in the future. Spec wise they are pretty much the same.

Yamaha AS500- powerhouse at the price. Big, though.

Onkyo TX8020/8030- again, two latge, powerful units, but with digital inputs as well. The £20ish difference is an extra 40w a side- headroom is always useful, don't want to be driving an amp to clipping.

Speaker wise, you should be looking at Q Acoustics 2010i/2020i, or even the Concept 20 if you can save a tad longer. Monitor Audio Bronze BX2 arw a good shout, but I personally wouldn't put them with the Yamaha or the Onkyo amps i mentioned, but that's just personal taste. Bowers and Wilkins have just released the 600 S2 range, so the original 686 and 685 may be flogged off cheaply. Wharfedale still have decent offerings.

If I may make a request though- try not to haggle for the discount at hifi shops- margins are around the 10-30%, which is peanuts, and commission is paid off of the margin- maybe 0.5% of the retail value for a 25% margin product. Plus, a salesperson will often have a below minimum wage basic, and have to hit a certain amount of commission before he/she sees anything over minimum wage. It's a bit of a slap in the face to be asked about discount after organising a demo and spending sometimes 5+ hours with a customer.

I don't haggle on anything that isn't a car!

My grandma just gave me my first record player. Really jazzed to get some vinyl, I have always been a huge fan of cd's for the art and the physical attachment to albums.

As of right now, I'm listening to The Lonely Island - Turtleneck & Chain. Feelin' either Strange Mercy or Supreme Clientele next.

edit: nope, Parquet Courts - Light Up Gold is next, final answer

I love Stankonia. My ex gave me a vinyl copy for Christmas. One of the few good things I got out of her.

Anyone get anything cool today? I spent a hundred bucks and got a few things I've been looking at for a while.

( ) is pretty much my favourite record. I should really get my hands on the vinyl.

Only picked up two RSD releases - Frank Zappa and Regina Spektor 7".
Other records, MF DOOM's Operation Doomsday and the Under the Skin OST
