I come from a background listening to mostly metal music, but have lately begun to gravitate towards more "conventional" or "radio-friendly" music like pop/rock and things. However, I find that any time I look up a live version of a song, it's in playback!! What the hell?

This makes me lose alot of respect for and interest in the artist in question. What's the point of playing live if you're not actually playing but just putting on a record for the audience?

I just don't get it... can someone explain to me this massive use of playback everywhere? Because I've been used to musicians who actually PLAY their instruments. Is actually playing your instruments live reserved just for certain genres like metal? Or have I started getting into the "wrong" artists?
