Question And now I'm a believer.... and may I be "forgiven"

Ok, You know, I'm a fan of MetalicA's works, and well... for years all I could find were CDs and crappy mp3s... And I thought it was just 'cause any of the "higher rez" stuff didn't exist or just was the same thing wrapped in a different package (vinyl, sacd, dvd-a, et cetera). (never bothered until recently to visit their site and thus educate myself)

Then I finally found a pristine copy of Metallica's earlier works on Vinyl! WHOLLY DEFERENCE BATMAN! I can hear all the instruments and vocals separately! Never knew they were this good! I mean don't get me wrong, I always thought Metallica were great artists. I just never got to hear how good they were/are via a wider separation of instrumentation and more room for the instruments to sound off via a proper master!

This all makes me wonder how many bands/artists I've put down in the past because of what I heard on their CD/MP3 were actually as good as what some of their fans said? I wonder how great the beatles really were? All I've ever heard were the REALLY poor CDs and Mp3s...

A proper master, with a proper medium played through proper enough equipment makes all the difference.

Then again, is it just me or are the vinyls for anything Black Album onward still just as bad as the CDs and Mp3s? I mean to me there's no room to breath and it's more and more head-banging against a brick wall the closer to magnetic you get?

But Man, I am now a believer in Vinyl and possibly 24 bit if they ever get around to doing proper engineering again.... any bands have proper engineering/mastering and worth going to the 180-200g 45rpm's now-a-days?

I believe it has something to do with dynamic range rather than the medium it was recorded on. I once read an article about it somewhere.

EDIT: http://www.cracked.com/article_2025...ow-they-do.html

Scroll down to #4. I know, I know, "Cracked as a source? WHAT ARE YOU ON!?". This is one of their serious articles with a shade of humour than their full on silly article.

SECOND EDIT: Look up "Loudness Wars" to learn more about it.

I've had the same experience with Iron Maiden on vinyl, simply blown away. Also, Beatles will hopefully do the same for you, and they're pretty easy to find on vinyl. Enjoy the auditory bliss!

Thanks, and definitely looking forward to Beatles on vinyl!

Well yea, I know what you mean by it's not necessarily the medium it's put on, but you have to admit that 16bit CDs don't really allow a large dynamic range now do they?

Vinyl is great. My grandparents have a bunch of old Beatles records, and they sound incredible. So warm.
