Yeah, I've been watching a lot of 5th Doctor stuff lately, and he seems to land in Medieval England every second story, but they don't feel the need to make it into a running thing, like his second home is there or something.

I think my problem is that the Paternoster Gang are just so insanely unrealistic. Every piece of dialogue Vastra has is so "supercilious badarse action hero" that it makes me want physically uncomfortable to listen to her sometimes. Jenny seems to exist purely to reinforce that Vastra is gay, and the attempts at humour with Strax get less and less witty each episode, to the point where we get that horrible piece of slapstick with the newspaper in the latest episode.

I like a good returning set of characters, but the Paternoster Gang feel like cartoon characters, and then they expect us to take it seriously when the baddies close in, and I don't feel it at all.

My favourite part of the new episode was when he said no to that annoying bitch joining.

Got some proper Arthur C. Clarke moments this time. Over all a good episode, though
show

Capaldi was brilliant, he's really turning out to be a good character.

Enjoyed this ep alot more, wasn't perfect. But an idea that could've been god awful turned out pretty well - was quite interesting. As much as I loved tennant and smith, capaldi seems pretty great for this role atm.

I agree. Not an amazing episode, but still a solid outing, and Capaldi once again shows off why they picked him for the role. Love the reactions of Clara and the soldiers to the Doctor in the first few rooms they explore, the coldness he displays and how they all react. So good.

The guns in this episode were actually more effective than usual, I though. I don't get why Daleks insist on chasing people towards closing doors rather than just shooting them all as they run away.

Because shouting "EXTERMINATE" for five minutes provides tension

Really not a bad episode though, I still hate the Daleks but whatever. Kind of cool to see the comparison between The Doctor and the Daleks, but that wasn't vocalised properly I don't think.

And yeah that "what did we learn today?" was annoying. Easily the most awkward part of the episode

Capaldi is making usually cringey episodes into stuff that is better and not vomit-inducing just to his delivery of lines. He is great.

The most awkward part for me was Clara's 'banter' with the soldier-turned-teacher. That felt so wrong.

When she was like "what so soldiers go home and cry about it" and then saw that that obviously affected him, and then didn't apologise or anything, I was just like "man, she's a bitch"

The whole PTSD thing felt really, really badly handled, unsubtle and frankly a little insensitive. At the time I said it was the worst sequence in any episode of Doctor Who since that shocking episode with Peter Kay.

It was a really clumsy parallel between the well-known real life suffering of former soldiers and what the Doctor is going through post-special, and why he's acting so different now. About as subtle and smart as a brick to the face.
