I know. And I do spend time writing music and playing it and everything. I just do it because I guess I just like to know "artist A is similar to artists B, C, and D. So those artists belong in their own group"

Here's how my foobar is set up:

Music > Punk > Subgenres of punk

Simple enough that it doesn't get ridiculously nitpicky and complex enough that I know where every band is rooted in.

Having trouble with these bands as they don't give me the same feel as older bands do.

Thursday
Thrice (first 3 releases)
Beloved (US) (sounds like Alexisonfire. So I'll include them)
Alexisonfire
This Day Forward (new)
Fear Before (old and new)
Codeseven (new)
Glassjaw (post-hardcore, but they don't sound like older post-hardcore)
In Pieces
At The Drive-In

If someone could explain how the genres of screamo, posts-hardcore, and emo were reinvented, it would be great help. I get mixed feels of melodic hardcore someyimes as well for some bands

I figured out Thrice, Thursday, Beloved, and Alexisonfire. I'm deciding to label them emocore even though I said the term was useless. TO ME IMO, emocore describes a style of emo that is heavier but not necessarily with a post-hardcore sound. That's my opinion at least. I'm having trouble with In Pieces (first album) as its a cross between emocore and metalcore

Too late. I put In Pieces under emocore and Codeseven under post-rock. Glassjaw, At The..., and Fear under post-hardcore. I can see how post-hardcore has evolved with screamo influences. It's present in The Blood Brothers

Tell me about it.

I mean I dig a decent way into sub-genres, but I keep it relatively general and only go one or two layers deep.

Example:

Hardcore
Hardcore > Metallic Hardcore
Hardcore > Post-Hardcore
Hardcore > Screamo

Metal > Melodic Death Metal
Metal > Metalcore
Metal > Death Metal
Metal > Death Metal > Symphonic Death Metal
Metal > Death Metal > Technical Death Metal

But I don't lose sleep over categorization.

I'm not. I love watching you try to sort this stuff out It doesn't bother me one way or the other. You do take it to an extreme though and over analyze more often than not. You would do really well in the science field with your ability to put things into different groups based on specific characteristics. You should use that to your advantage. Just try not to over do it.
