Guitarists who have had Carpal Tunnel or Tendonitis...

I seem to have moderate Carpal Tunnel and Tendonitis in my left wrist. It's mainly from typing but prevents me from playing guitar.

If any of you have had had this in the past, were you able to fully heal it and go back to playing guitar full time? Or has it still lingered and never fully gone away? How were you able to heal it and how long did it take?

Doctors are taking too damn long so I don't know when I'll see a specialist.

My guitar teacher had both as a result of his old job, and he was still a pretty good player. Not a shredder, but he knew how to play a tasty jazz melody, and he could play the chords for anything you gave him on sheet music or anything he heard once.

PRICE

Protection
Rest and Reduction
Ice
Compression
Elevation

Compression doesn't necessarily apply here because carpal tunnel/ tendonitis is a chronic injury, rather than an acute one. Ice and anti inflammatories are your friend. Refrain from activities that are aggravating the tissue until pain subsides. I'm majoring in sports medicine and neuropsych so I have to take a lot of injury rehab classes. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

Both!

OP, as far as I know you are screwed, there is no easy treatment for CTS. You can get relief from splits, or temporary relief from steroid injections into your wrists, but the only way to completely treat CTS is surgery. My step dad was a carpenter, and they had to build houses with hammers, there was non of this portable air compressor stuff back then, he ended up with CTS in both writs like many people who banged nails back then, only way they could fix it was surgery.

I had tendinitis. I went to the doctors and got a brace for my wrist. I work in IT and so I spend many hours a day typing. After about 2 weeks of wearing this wrist support the pain got a lot easier and eventually went away.

I work in 3D and use a mouse 12+ hours a day making minute adjustments. Wrist killer. I was considering giving up guitar at one point because it exacerbated the pain. Inspect how you hold the guitar. If you can avoid twisting/bending your wrist without contorting yourself too badly, do. I now tilt the guitar away from me so I can play the lower notes with my arm fully extended, and move my shoulder back to play higher notes. Changing to an alternate mouse (trackball/pad) helps too.

It's highly possible to learn how to play guitar incorrectly so it causes long term damage, but correcting posture and angle doesn't take long.

I've had tendonitis in my wrist a couple of times. It usually went away after about a week. I never had any lingering symptoms or issues.

Never experienced carpal tunnel.

I do have a medical condition that affects my guitar playing, but it is not tendonitis or carpal tunnel. I have arthritis and the bone in my right wrist became lodged "out of position." This is very painful. I take a lot of painkillers.

The way that I deal with this is that I only play guitar or type on the computer for short periods of time. If I do any activity for too long, then the pain becomes too severe and I have to stop.

I would suggest that someone with carpal tunnel would be in a similar position, so my advice is to only play guitar for short periods of time.

Leo Kottke had shitty form and got tendinitis in his picking thumb I think. He then learned proper form and continued to be a stud.
