You pay 20% VAT on most things you buy anyway (unless you only buy raw foods) ![]() The European Health Insurance Card give you healthcare at a reduced cost or sometimes for free. It will cover you for treatment that is needed to allow you to continue your stay until your planned return. It also covers you for treatment of pre-existing medical conditions and for routine maternity care, as long as you're not going abroad to give birth. So you're pretty much guaranteed no bank busting bills if you have an accident, means you don't necessarily need extra health insurance when holidaying in the EU. Personally I find the right to live, work and travel between EU countries pretty nice. I think if more people in this country had a second european language like french or german they would be more inclined to work outside of the UK.

Businesses get access to the European market without any unfair disadvantages. Consumers are guaranteed a certain level of consumer protection within that trading block. Labour can move freely and expect similar levels of worker rights wherever the work is available. Environmentalists get regulation of industries that aren't strictly tied to national boundaries (e.g. fishing). Police get greater cooperation from other police forces in pursuing criminals who flee the country. Certain basic rights are guaranteed and cannot be easily altered by the government of the day. And individuals have a form of recourse against individual states if they fail to guarantee these rights. Throw in the fact that laws become more effective with wider harmonisation and the thing almost seems to look like a good idea. People see the cash amount that we put into it and then complain about how little we get back from it, conveniently ignoring that even our own system doesn't work that way. If you pay X amount in tax, you aren't guaranteed X amount of services.

Didn't the UK plug millions into the EU but still they turn around with their ridiculous laws and meddling and expect us to accept it?

I say EU membership is worth it for the EU chicks alone.

I don't understand why the public gets a say in this, the vast majority will vote based purely on the fact that they once saw Jeremy Clarkson say he disliked the EU and thus they should vote against staying a member.

I'm way too ignorant on the subject to really form any decent opinion.

True. So many people don't really know what they're talking about and make their voting decisions based on soundbites and headlines.

Welcome to democracy. If only those who understood voted there wouldn't be enough to make up a majority

It's only the fact that they think they really know what they're talking about that annoys me.

I think Great Britain should join the USA.
Leave the EU and transfer all money/powers to The White House... I read it in a book once; Not to be confused with that drug movie with the same title. ![]() Let's put America one step closer to Europe. |
