so idk if this is relevant or not, but my father was a squad boss wild-land firefighter for 10 years and i remember when he had to go clean up the wreckage after that terrible Columbia disaster. He told me stuff about people finding gloves that still had hands in them and boots with feet still in them. He told me about how every firefighter had to be patted down by federal agents after leaving the site to ensure national security. I guess a few guys tried to take souvenirs and the feds weren't having it.

I might be able to get a more detailed story from him if anyone is interested.

Space travel, to any destination beyond possibly Europa, or the Asteroid Belt, at this point seems impractical to the point of canoeing to Antarctica. Without some major leap in our understanding and therefore technology we are just primitives sending the bold out into the wilderness in make-shift tin cans. That they would fail catastrophically from time to time is obvious.

Many a bold tribesman was devoured by a tiger, I'm sure, before Agriculture finally unlocked the wilderness, and laid it to waste.

Magnetospheric MultiScale.

http://mms.gsfc.nasa.gov/about_mms.html

Researches magnetosphere activities, namely magnetospheric reconnection

thats just over my head enough for me to grasp it but not get it. tl;dr look like studying the interactions of the earth and sun's magnetospheres and what that means for earth satellites?

From what I remember, magnetic reconnection is the process that occurs when a broken off "piece" of the Sun's magnetosphere, hurtling towards Earth because of violent solar activity, Makes contact with the Earth's magnetosphere. Most times these fields aren't heading towards each other with opposite polarities. The Sun's magnetosphere piece can push powerfully against our magnetosphere, and then violently flip, so that its "South" merges with our "North" in an aggressive way, causing a spurt of plasma and high energy particles all over the place.

Solar weather studies are pretty cool

Had an interesting day Monday. I spent it hanging out with Tom Mueller of Space X and he is pretty excited about what is happening right now in aerospace. I need to go catch one of his launches at Vandenburg.

I wonder what all of this means for deep space radiation dynamics, like would a manned mission to Mars be impractical during certain solar cycles?

Off the top of my head, not necessarily. Spacecraft shielding generally works pretty well at protecting from harmful radiation. EVAs are often purposefully timed on the ISS to avoid increased solar winds and sometimes astronauts have had to scramble to get back inside in a timely manner.

Although, I don't know if spacecraft shielding protects against 100% of the dangers, I'd have to specifically look into that. The ISS isn't a great comparison tool, because it's under the Van Allen belts and still significantly shielded from solar winds because of the Earth's magnetosphere. The 'void' inbetween planets would be home to more harmful radiation, and the astronauts would be exposed to it for a longer period of time.

I think that a more pressing matter would be spacecraft design to alleviate the effects of extended microgravity on the human physiology.

I am a small business owner unrelated to Space X but I also serve as a performance driving instructor for the Porsche Club. Tom is a member and came out to drive with us at the race track. He also gave us a personal tour of his shop in Hawthorne last year. Wow!

My dad was an aerospace engineer back in the 60s-70s working on the Titan program and jet engine nacelle technologies at Rohr. The Space X tour brought back a lot of childhood memories.

Here is another scientist, friend, and Porsche guy that studies mostly the atmospheres of Saturn and Jupiter in infrared. He gave me a tour of JPL, and we spent an evening at Palomar Observatory while gathering data on Neptune. Palomar 200" was the largest telescope in the world for 50 years and this was a bucket list trip for me. Good people to know if you are a science geek.

Uh oh

Inauspicious event for one of the prime contract holders in the Commercial Crew Program.

Sounds like the incident occurred during separation of the first stage.

Visiting space would be the highlight of my entire life, but I'd be so god-damn terrified if I actually had the chance.
