heres your C-major scale in all 7 positions ...
just learn the shapes of these and you know all your major sales. the only difference is you play the same exact shape off of D , or E if you want those scales. all the root notes (in these cases the note C , because these are all c major scales) have an R next too them. being the guitar is very geometric and shape/pattern oriented, learn these 7 shapes and you can play all 12 major keys in every position. e----------------------------------------1--3--5------- b---------------------------------3--5------------------ g---------------------2--4--r5------------------------- d----------2--3--5------------------------------------ a--r3--5------------------------------------------------ e------------------------------------------------------- e-------------------------------------------3--5--7--- b------------------------------------5--6-------------- g------------------------4--r5--7--------------------- d--------------3--5--7-------------------------------- a---r3--5--7------------------------------------------ e------------------------------------------------------ e---------------------------------------------5--7--r8-- b-----------------------------------5--6--8------------- g---------------------------r5--7------------------------ d-----------------5--7--9------------------------------- a-------5--7--8----------------------------------------- e---r8--------------------------------------------------- e----------------------------------------------------------7--r8--10-- b--------------------------------------------------8--10--------------- g--------------------------------------7--9--10----------------------- d------------------------7--9--r10------------------------------------ a------------7--8--10------------------------------------------------- e--r8--10------------------------------------------------------------- e------------------------------------------------------------r8-10-12 b--------------------------------------------------10-12-------------- g----------------------------------------9-10-12--------------------- d---------------------------9-r10-12--------------------------------- a---------------8-10-12---------------------------------------------- e--r8-10-12--------------------------------------------------------- e-----------------------------------------10-12-13--------- b---------------------------10-12-r13---------------------- g-----------------10-12------------------------------------- d--r10-12-14---------------------------------------------- a-------------------------------------------------------------- e-------------------------------------------------------------- e--------------------------------------------12-13-15------- b------------------------------12-r13-15-------------------- g---------------------12-14----------------------------------- d--------12-14-15------------------------------------------- a--r15--------------------------------------------------------- e--------------------------------------------------------------- these all cycle ... the next scale in this order would be the same one you started with ...but now on the 15th fret (everything after the 12the fret is identical too everything after open position ... so playing the first scale shape from the 15th fret gives you the same scale only an octave higher) these are all root position (meaning they start on the root of the scale ...... in this case C.... which makes all of these scales C major) if you want an A major scale .... you use any one of these positions/shapes but start it on A ... same thing with any other Key. obviously there are diatonic notes below the root .... but starting with root begginings are vital for you too see their function and shape without getting all confused. anymore Questions on anything realtaing to this, post em here. ![]() Last edited by casualty01 : 06-29-2002 at 10:59 PM. |

so... just play that shape, except starting on D, E or whatever? thats what you mean by play the same exact shape off of... X note, right?[edit] just noticed I had 888 posts! I can't post a new post, since that'll change it... I'll just forever stay at 888 and just hope I already posted in the threads I want to post in... or I could go to 999.... hmmmmm[/edit]

don't laugh, a few more inquires:
1) you can play the shapes off ANY note right? F# major? Bb (b flat) major? 2) hmm... the middle shape is the one that sounds like a scale to me, but thats probably because I'm a musical idiot. the others sound like they don't have enough notes or they have too many. what exactly is a 'scale' definition wise? 3) am I supposed to learn all of these shapes in a day? argh... I've gotten through 4 (3 really, cuz I already knew one shape) and my brain's screwing up the shapes... am i doomed? oh no! ![]()

1. yes ... off of any note , and then you'll have that notes major scale 2. a scale "definition wise" is a group of pitches arranged in a specific pattern ..... and all those scales (due to the limit of strings ) only go up to certain otes within the scale ... like the first one goes up to the M6 (major 6th ... or the 6th note of the scale) ... the second shape goes up to the M7th .... the next one stops at the root , the next at the M2 , then the M3rd , then the P4th , then P5th , then it all repeats . each scale shape gives you a different range ..... when you can connect them , thats when its really beneficial 3. no learn them in the amount of time it takes you , just so long as you LEARN them .... like your address and Phone # , those are things you have learned/memorized to the point of you'll never forget them . just dont slack off and take 4 months to learn them ....it should only take you a week or 2 to memorize the shapes, and then another month to really internalize them . |

Now is being called a guitar geek actually an insult, because i would be damn proud to be a guitar geek... it would reflect years of study
