Picked up my first strat today, still getting used to the sounds coming out of the single coils but I think it's a keeper. My only question, is do they put some sort of plastic coating on the fretboards of MiM Strats? It feels like there's a plastic film on it.

Do you have a maple fretboard? Maple fretboards are always finished. On the current MIM Standards, they use gloss poly on the fretboard and satin on the back of the neck just like on the American Standards. They switched from satin all over just recently.

Yeah it's a maple neck, I didn't realize they were glossy on the top side of the neck. Not really sure how I feel about the guitar, it looks and plays great when I'm sitting on the couch noodling and watching tv but when I plug it in it's just not what my ears want to hear. Bought it kinda spur of the moment but I may take it back and buy new pickups for my explorer instead. Time will tell.

The Strat is probably the easiest guitar around to change the sound of. If you like how it plays, there's a boatload of different single-coil sized humbuckers that drop in without any other modifications whatsoever. Part of the fun is to modify and make a Fender your own.

I'm very pleased with my new American Standard. The Bordeaux Metallic is the nicest colour they have ever offered, I'd say. (Very dark, metallic red.) Plays good, flawless build and a very nice lightweight body. My problem now is that I didn't expect to like playing an SSS Strat again... but I do. The Customshop Fat 50's are cool. Don't get me wrong, they sound nothing like how I'd generally like a guitar to sound, but that sound gets at my imagination in a way that a "WROOAM!" Les Paul-sound never do.

Maybe the JB Jr's will go in my MIM. Or perhaps I should get another Strat...

I get that, and if I had more cash Id probably go that route but it's going to be a bit before I can put more money into my rig so I'm thinking one awesome guitar makes more sense than two that need upgrades. Down the road I can always pick up another strat.

Do partscasters count?

If so here's a few more shots

show

Body is a Rockaudio paulownia stratocaster shape. Not sure if Rockaudio is popular/known around here but I guess they're similar to the GFS bodies/necks only they have more options and are a bit cheaper. Also they're cut to fender spec so those parts should be able to fit. They offer drilling so I got the trem holes pre-drilled but I had to drill and install the guard, jackplate and trem claw.

Body came out okay, but I had very minor cosmetic issues around routed areas and the cavities are a bit tight for some of the parts. Trem and neck lined up good though so that's really what matters in the end. For what I paid I really can't complain.

Neck is an Allparts TMO-Fat (It's pretty chunky) that I scored off the classifieds for decently cheap. It was drilled for vintage tuners. Unfortunately I have none so I just reamed it out, drilled new screw holes and installed some gotoh style tuners instead. Guard I think is MIM Fender and pups are cheap ceramic dirt. Got some cool gibby style witch hat knobs too.

Probably gonna toss a gold guard on the thing.

I bit the Bullet! long story short... i have numerous very nice guitars but do most of my playing when i am sitting in the living room just picking up a guitar and playing (no amp). A few months ago our last oldest cat passed away and we did a massive re-boot with 4 glorious kittens. So the guitars had to go into the studio (a.k.a. - safe room). SO since november i wasn't playing all that much anymore. Come to realize it was because all my guitars were hidden away. Low and behold the dreaded guitar center had a super clearance with Squier bullets on sale for $99. So i grabbed one and put it out with the herd. Cleaned it up and dialed it in and made a vow that the only thing i would do to this guitar would be play it and maybe put stickers on the various new dings and scratches.
When the guitar center guy tried to sell me a warranty i just laughed. Rock on you glorious green piece of junk! Truth be told it isn't that bad. in any case i am playing every night again to a captive kitten army.

I'm gonna play guitar
A captive kitten army couldn't hold me back
They're gonna be in awe
Or taking naps right behind my back

And I'm talking to myself at night
Because I can't forget
Back and forth through my mind
Behind a bullet Strat

And the message coming from my eyes says leave it alone.
