Keeping a band together

I've been in a lot of bands. It always seems like a struggle keeping a band together. What do you think it takes to keep a band moving forward?

Generally the band as a whole must have mutual ambitions, similar music interests and the same level of commitment, whether it be a professional level band or a local band who play the occasional gig. But downtime is also important, the band should take a break every so often in order to keep things fresh.

Just a drummer and guitarist in a White Stripes style first thing that comes to mind for me is The Black Keys. But here are a few that you could give a go.
