Guitar comping for Mingus charts
Are there any guitarists that have played Mingus in a big band setting?
My high-school band is working on Moanin' and I'm not entirely sure what would be suitable for the chart, like Freddie Green comping sounds like it would fill out the sound too much (my chart is entirely slashes with the only instructions being 'Comp Thematically'). What do? |

For that tune, I would on strum 1 and the & of two.

With Mingus tunes, I find that the guitar is less important than the other instruments. You're there to fill out the sound more than be heard. That said, your guitar should be present, but not overwhelming. Avoid strum patterns that are too erratic, or too busy. Less is more.

Dude, don't ever do freddie greene style comping unless you're playing like a 30's big band swing tune. real talk.
work on doing 1-2 note voicings and stab them...if you don't have written accents in the lead sheet (like HIT THIS CHORD ON THE & OF 4), then you should probably feel it out w/ the piano player or look at where the accents really need to be based on the melody.

Alright, so what I should be doing is playing on the shots and accents for the most part? |

All comping should respond to the soloist or rhythm section as far as I'm concerned.
